Recognising key species by rhythm, tone and pattern
Learning which birds sing where and why
Beginning to separate individual voices in the landscape
Saturday Morning – 8:00am
Birdsong Walk
A relaxed morning walk focused on learning to recognise individual bird songs, ideal for beginners and those wanting to build confidence before the dawn chorus.
This session is ideal for anyone new to birdsong, or for those who want to lay solid foundations before experiencing the intensity of the dawn chorus.
Saturday Early Afternoon
Birdsong Walk: Building Recognition & Confidence
This early afternoon session builds on the morning walk in a more reflective, spacious way. With fewer birds singing at once, it’s an ideal time to consolidate learning.
Sunday – Dawn Chorus Walk (International Dawn Chorus Day)
Sunday 3rd May is International Dawn Chorus Day – and early May is one of the best times of year to experience it.
Based on site records from the Grange Project, species commonly heard include:
Blackbird, Robin, Wren, Song Thrush, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Yellowhammer, Dunnock, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Tree Pipit, House Sparrow, Stock Dove, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Swallow, House Martin, Pied Wagtail and others.
Bird Song Guide:
Tim Birch has worked for the Wildlife Trusts in the UK for over 13 years and is deeply experienced in nature conservation and education. He is currently a Trustee of Tir Natur, a Welsh rewilding organisation, and Chair of Size of Wales, supporting rainforest protection and restoration globally.
Tim is an expert in birdsong and deeply passionate about helping people reconnect with nature through listening. As landscapes are restored and biodiversity increases, birdsong is one of the most immediate and joyful signs of recovery – something that makes Tim especially excited about rewilding and its future.
