REWILDING

Letting nature take the lead

In traditional nature conservation, you take a rare and biodiverse site and maintain these features. In rewilding, you start with nature depleted areas and allow natural processes to take the lead, helping to enhance biodiversity and restore our natural ecosystems.

We began with understanding what we currently have on the land, walking the acreage on a daily basis and conducting a variety of baseline surveys with the support of Youngwilders and local volunteer groups.

More recently, our two British Saddleback pigs have been showing us how it’s really done with their efforts in ecological disturbance. Our wonderful volunteer community has also been busy removing fences, planting trees and distributing green hay and wildflowers.

Find out more about volunteer opportunities with us here.

Given the absence of key wild species across the farm, we’ve also been replicating natural processes by pretending to be a beaver (leaky woody debris and coppicing), a cow (scalloping hedges and selective topping) and a wild boar (creating scrapes and wallows).
