Community day: Saturday 15th February

Thank you so much for expressing an interest in our fourth community event on Saturday 15th of February, 2025. We hope this page helps to answer any questions you may have, but please reach out to us at hello@grangeproject.co.uk if there’s anything we haven’t covered. (SIGN UP BELOW).

What’s the plan for the day?

We are fortunate to have a number of modern barns that provide excellent shelter from the elements. We will be utilising these for all of our refreshment breaks and as a base to return to at any point during the day. There will be a portaloo available for volunteer’s use.

10:30 - 12:30: Walk around project/Rewilding Activity

12:30 - 13:30: Lunch (Provided)

13:30 - 15:00: Rewilding Activity

15:00 - 15:30: Tea & Cake

15:30 - 15:45: Finish, Feedback

What will I be doing?

The primary effort for this community day is to plant our heritage orchard and protective hedging. Heritage orchards are vital habitats because they support a rich diversity of wildlife, including pollinators, birds, and rare fungi, thriving among the mix of old trees, deadwood, and wildflower-rich grassland. Their traditional management practices create a mosaic of microhabitats, preserving biodiversity that is often lost in modern commercial orchards. Furthermore, in the medium-term, they will provide a source of fruit that we’ll be able to juice and preserve for guests to the project, as well as an education resources for young people.

Alternative activities could include:

  • Tree Maintenance - Checking on all the trees that were planted in 2024 and replacing the shorter tree guards with longer protection (blame the deer).

  • Fence Removal - The most physical option, but hopefully aided by some mechanics and critical for creating the sense of ‘wildness’.

  • Raised Bed Creation - We’re hoping to use the roof purlins reclaimed from the barn conversion to help create begin our market garden area.

Are you providing refreshments?

Absolutely. We really value your time and know that providing a range of delicious and locally sourced home-cooked food will help morale to remain high! We also believe sharing food and drink together is an important part of connecting as a community. Vegan and vegetarian options will be provided as standard.

How do we get to you?

15 minutes drive from Monmouth and 20 minutes from Abergavenny along the B4233, plus we are more than happy to collect people from our nearest train station (Abergavenny).
