Community day: Saturday 27th July

Thank you so much for expressing an interest in our second community event on Saturday 27th of July, 2024. We hope this page helps to answer any questions you may have, but please reach out to us at hello@grangeproject.co.uk if there’s anything we haven’t covered. (SIGN UP BELOW).

What’s the plan for the day?

We are fortunate to have a number of modern barns that provide excellent shelter from the elements. We will be utilising these for all of our refreshment breaks and as a base to return to at any point during the day. There will be a portaloo available for volunteer’s use.

What will I be doing?

There will be a range of activities occurring on the land and you decide what you’d like to get involved in, dependent on your interest or energy levels! Each activity will be led by an experienced individual who will ensure there is always something interesting for you to get involved in.

Activities may include:

Butterfly Surveying - As part of the baseline surveying of the project, you’ll learn how to follow a ‘transect’ and document what you see (with someone who actually knows what they’re doing!) This will all contribute to the Big Butterfly Count 2024.

Tree Maintenance - Checking on all the trees that were planted in March and removing competing weeds and grasses, plus adding mulch if required.

Green Hay Distribution - We’re going to ‘act like a cow’ by taking the green hay from the most diverse areas of the land and scattering it across bare ground.

Fence Removal - The most physical option, but hopefully aided by some mechanics and critical for creating the sense of ‘wildness’.

At the end of the day, you’re all invited to join us for a documentary screening of ‘Why not Scotland?’ a feature length documentary about rewilding projects across mainland Europe. Watch the trailer here.

Are you providing refreshments?

Absolutely. We really value your time and know that providing a range of delicious and locally sourced home-cooked food will help morale to remain high! We also believe sharing food and drink together is an important part of connecting as a community. Vegan and vegetarian options will be provided as standard.

How do we get to you?

15 minutes drive from Monmouth and 20 minutes from Abergavenny along the B4233, plus we are more than happy to collect people from our nearest train station (Abergavenny).
